As the coronavirus spread like wildfire, it not only left victims on their deathbeds but millions of others in a financial crisis. The pandemic has brought about the closure of schools, workplaces, and other public areas, undoubtedly shaking the world economy. Back in March, America voted unanimously to deliver $1200 checks to its residents, with limited bonuses for other certain qualifiers. However, many found the one-time payment to be insufficient. Almost 8 million people have slipped under the country’s poverty line since the beginning of the shutdowns, an exemplary representation of COVID's disastrous effects on struggling families.
Recently, congressional negotiators have been working to pass new legislation in response to the financial frustration. The new trillion-dollar relief package would deliver another round of handouts such as unemployment benefits and a second round of stimulus checks. While the package is yet to be confirmed as of Friday, December 18, lawmakers are optimistic.
While many are welcoming the new aid package, complaints have emerged surrounding America’s handling of the financial crisis. Countries like Canada have been praised for their monthly $2000 relief packages, which sharply contrasts with the scarce aid given by the American government.
